The marketing and communications team of Krysel Brands discussed with Amaka Amatokwu-Ndekwu, the Chief Executive Officer of Pyne Hospitality Company LLC, the resilient powerhouse behind the prestigious Pyne Awards Africa and Pyne Tourism Conference. In the conversation, she discussed her background in the hospitality industry, the inspiration behind the Pyne Africa Awards, and so much more.

Q1: It’s amazing to have you here with us! Can you introduce yourself to our audience?

Amaka: Hello Pioneers! I am Amaka Amatokwu-Ndekwu. I am the Chief Executive Officer of the Pyne Hospitality Company LLC, organizers of the prestigious Pyne Awards Africa and the Pyne Tourism Conference. I have been in the industry for over 16 years, managing hotels for different international and a Nigerian brand. I have also been privileged to lead committees shaping tourism policies across different countries, contributing significantly to the growth of African tourism. Globally, I am recognised as an influencer in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

Q2: What inspired you to launch the Pyne Awards in the hospitality sector?

Amaka: The inspiration behind launching the Pyne Awards came from my deep admiration for pioneers in hospitality. I witnessed firsthand their immense passion and dedication, which often went unnoticed and unacknowledged. I felt compelled to create a platform where their excellence and contributions could be celebrated. At Pyne Awards, our focus is not just on brands but on the individuals behind them – the unsung heroes driving innovation and excellence in global tourism and hospitality. This is why in everything we do, we ensure that we radiate excellence and class. Our commitment ensures that every experience is not only genuine but also unforgettable!

Q3: Can you describe some of the challenges you faced while establishing the Pyne Awards, and how you overcame them?

Amaka: Certainly, every great endeavour comes with challenges, and establishing the Pyne Awards were no exception. Initially, gaining acceptance as a company committed to excellence was a hurdle convincing sponsors of the potential within the tourism industry, which, at the time, was often overlooked. Progress has been made in some regions, but overcoming scepticism is a gradual process. Additionally, convincing people in the tourism industry that the Pyne Awards is a distinguished brand, distinct from others that may use more dubious methods of awarding recognition, was a challenge. It took time for our brand to be acknowledged and respected. Today, being referred to as the Oscars of the hospitality and tourism industry in Africa is a testament to our credibility and impact.

Q4: What sets Pyne Awards apart from other recognition programs in the hospitality sector?

Amaka: What distinguishes Pyne Awards from other recognition programs is our unwavering commitment to excellence. Also, integrity is fundamental in our approach—we firmly believe that nominees must truly earn their place, let alone achieve victory. As a Pan-African company, we pride ourselves on setting exceptional standards in everything we do.
